Proper measurements are such a crucial part of installing any home feature or extension, and if done incorrectly, often result in drafts and gaps in your walls or doors that won’t close properly. To get you started and ensure you can effectively measure your home for the correct bi-fold door sizes, we’re going to walk you through a quick and simple process you can do yourself.
WHAT ARE THE STANDARD BI-FOLD DOOR SIZES?
Perhaps it should come as no surprise that, when it comes to standard bi-fold door sizes, there is no one size fits all measurement you can reference to make installation fast and easy.
Every home is different, and that means that each set of door measurements will be too. However, that’s not to say there isn’t an average range of bi-fold door sizes you can turn to.
When looking at height, in particular, you’ll often find that the average bi-fold door height often falls somewhere between 2000mm and 2700mm.
Of course, there’s more that goes into determining the height of bi-fold doors than your own personal preference. Other factors to consider for bi-fold door height include:
- The size of the room you’re upgrading
- The material you’re using
- The location of the doors in said room.
As for bi-fold door widths, this is going to be expressly determined by where you want your door to be positioned in the room, and the number of panels you want to use to bring your envisioned plan to life.
Naturally, folding door lengths will likely be different for everyone, but customers tend to favour a bi-fold door widths between 2000mm and 7000mm.
How to measure for a bi-fold door
So, now that you have some idea of our bi-fold door standard sizes, the next step is to measure your space. We recommend following these three steps when measuring for any door:
- Measure the width of your door space at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Measure the height of your bi-fold doors on the right, left, and middle of the space.
- Using the smallest of these measurements, subtract 10mm to account for fitting tolerances, and use the resulting total as your base measurements.
Once you’ve followed these three steps, do them again, and a third time if you can. When doing any form of construction, it’s always a good idea to double-check your measurements to minimise the likelihood of mistakes being made.
Finally, if you can, it’s always a good idea to note down how square or rectangular the space in question is. You can get a measurement for this by measuring the distance from the top left corner to the bottom right and then vice-versa. You’ll know if your opening is square if the measurements sit within 2mm of each other.
